Sofia Kourtesis

Peruvian-born, Berlin-based producer and DJ Sofia Kourtesis will release her third EP “Fresia Magdalena” on Ninja Tune’s Technicolour imprint in 2021.

Previous EPs “Sofia Kourtesis” (2019) and “Sarita Colonia” (2020) were released via the excellent Stockholm based label Studio Barnhus run by Kornél Kovács, Petter Nordkvist and Axel Boman.

The “Sofia Kourtesis” EP received an 8.0 review on Pitchfork: “The kind of house music that skirts convention and renounces rote functionality without ever forgetting that its purpose is to make people move.”Editorial support for “Sarita Colonia” EP also came from Pitchfork (“fluffy, cheerfully warped house with spoken snippets about Hollywood and lingerie, as well as soulful, winking vocals”), and Resident Advisor (“Sofia Kourtesis has an ear for offbeat samples, fuzzy-headed filter house and a certain tongue-in-cheek humour”); DJMag, Clash, NME, London In Stereo and more.

Danny Daze + Sister System in The Sound Room + Diego Andrés in The Bar

Growing up deep in the mix of classic electro and Miami bass and from their developing a love for Dutch electro and Detroit techno, Miami’s Danny Daze has always followed the rabbit down the hole. At the young age of 14 Daniel Gomez adopted his Danny Daze moniker and began playing out. This sense of adventure and daring comes across in his sets where he’s known for hairpin turns on the decks, ripping from techno to electro to italo to bass to somewhere you never saw coming. Daze promises to bring the heat to The Sound Room. Assisting Danny on the thermostat is fellow Miamian, deck-daredevil and manager Daze’s label Omnidisc, Sister System. In the bar is Diego Andrés.

Hannah Georgas + Zelma Stone

Hannah Georgas began creating the album ALL THAT EMOTION about a year after the release of her celebrated 2016 album FOR EVELYN—starting with an intensive process of writing and demoing songs in her Toronto apartment, and finishing with a month long retreat in Los Angeles. She began the record making process in the middle of 2018 when she traveled to Long Pond, the upstate New York studio & home of producer Aaron Dessner of The National.

On the album, you’ll hear about bad habits and prayerful families—right and wrong love—mistakes and moving on—casual cruelty and most of all change. Plotting the boundaries of where to place this music it’s emotionally fraught but warm & fuzzy. “An indie-minded avant-pop artist” was the Boston Globe’s formulation for her charms. Think of Fleetwood Mac meets The National; Kate Bush-sized passion with the earthiness of Cat Power or Aimee Mann. The album grows inside you and sticks to your insides. The songs are big tent anthems, rough at the edges but relatable.

All That Emotion” was released September 4, 2020 on Arts & Crafts/Brassland and was recently nominated for Adult Alternative Album of the Year at the 2022 Juno Awards.

Zelma Stone is the San Francisco-based music project of Bay Area native Chloe Zelma Studebaker. ‘The Best’ EP was released Aug 20, 2021.

Douglas Sherman + Joey Llanos

Two great party lineages align for our ceremonial launch of 7th Heaven at Public Records. The esteemed late musical hosts, David Mancuso of the Loft and Larry Levan of the Paradise Garage, both emphasized thematic development over beat-matching while keeping dance floors moving all night long. 7th Heaven is a rebirth of the grooves well-established by Mancuso and Levan. Featuring Douglas Sherman, who continues to be an integral part of the Loft’s legacy, and Joey Llanos, who was an essential contributor to the Garage and continues to spearhead the Paradise Garage Reunion parties, will function as a joint tribute to the collective legacies they represent. Expect a virtual party where they’ll play the music they love and foster an inclusive community that elevates the dancer above the clouds to a place of musical bliss, 7th Heaven.

The third installment of PR’s Machine Life series, a run of shows exploring the intersection of humans, machines and movement with both live electronic and dj sets, welcomes Cape Town-born Berlin-based artist Alan Abrahams aka Portable. Drawing inspiration from the indigenous African sounds of his youth, Chicago house records, and the myriad of styles heard during his time in London, Lisbon and now Berlin, Abrahams music crosses genres and times. The past, present and future coalesce in an atmospheric swirl of undulating rhythms and warm electronic tones. On the decks is savile - a PR resident - who has been an integral player in the American dance music underground for over a decade. With a distinctly midwestern flare, savile’s music is a body in flux, resisting commodification while grooving to the inimitable beat of change.

Machine Life: Bézier (Live) + Mike Swells

The fourth installment of PR’s Machine Life series, a run of shows exploring the intersection of humans, machines and movement with both live electronic and dj sets, welcomes producer and DJ Bézier. Looking to IDM, Italo Disco, EBM and techno for inspiration, the Sf and Berlin-based artist’s productions walk the line between soft and hard, emotive and gritty. Favoring analogue synth, Bezier creates deeply textured tracks that deliver cinematic, retro-futuristic soundscapes.Brooklyn’s Mike Swells, an artist who refuses to be bound by genre, tempo or time, will take over the decks for a versatile set. Sometimes warm and organic, other times furious or alien, it’s all part of his musical mosaic meant to inspire introspection and elicit emotion.

AdHoc Presents: Myriam Gendron

Myriam Gendron

Born in Ottawa in 1988 and raised between the province of Quebec, Washington D.C. and Paris, Myriam Gendron settled in Montreal at the age of sixteen, where she currently makes her living as a book dealer.

In 2014, she released Not So Deep As A Well, a nine-track album made from poems by Dorothy Parker that she set to music. The critically-acclaimed record, released by Feeding Tube Records and Mama Bird Recording Co., was picked for many best-of-the-year lists. Richard Meltzer wrote that Not So Deep As A Well, “is the hottest—and FINEST!—Impossible Love collection in, I dunno, 30 years.”

Seven years later, in 2021, Myriam Gendron released Ma délire — Songs of love, lost & found, a very modern exploration of North American folk tales and traditional melodies. The bilingual double album of 75 minutes, released on October 1st 2021 by Feeding Tube Records and Les Albums Claus, is very well received by local and international musical critique.

AdHoc pres. Rachika Nayar

Rachika Nayar is a Brooklyn-based musician, who crafts her compositions from processed guitar along with other synthesized and multi-instrumental sounds. She composed her full-length NNA Tapes debut, Our Hands Against the Dusk, over four years primarily by digitally mutating her improvisational guitar loops, and combining the contorted textures with shimmering synths, orchestral strings, and piano. In that fluid but always deeply felt form, her music eschews single genres and identities, as it wades through influences spanning both experimental (ambient-electronic, neoclassical) and popular vernaculars (Midwest emo, trance, and beyond). An EP, fragments, followed on RVNG Intl’s imprint Commend, a companion piece to her debut that offers a glimpse into the types of raw guitar loops that form the foundation of her songwriting process.

The fifth and final installment of PR’s Machine Life series, a run of shows exploring the intersection of humans, machines and movement with both live electronic and dj sets, welcomes the visionary, Beirut-born artist Rakans for his US debut. Distinct and daring in his approach to making music, he folds tender elements of electronic eclecticism into hard-hitting techno for a sound that brings to mind the taut sensation of bodily pleasures. Helming the decks is local DJ and BOUND headmistress, Katie Rex. Advocating for the catharsis of dancefloor hedonism, her sets fuse industrial sonic landscapes with ceiling busting rave anthems and the harsher sides of techno.
